CHRO OF MEMPHIS SINCE 2016

Alex Smith became the CHRO for the City of Memphis in 2016.
Raised in Gary, IN, Alex developed a heart for public service from watching her family serve in their community. Alex graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor’s in Economics and a Masters in Human Resources and Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota before beginning her HR career.
Before serving as the CHRO for the City of Memphis, she built a notable career as a strategic HR partner for key business leaders, serving in HR management roles for Brightstar Corporation, and industry leaders, including Target Corporation, and Microsoft Corporation.
Her passion for helping others and desire to solve complex business issues, Alex has created programs throughout her career that move organizations forward. From honoring 1968 Sanitation Strike survivors, to helping immigrant spouses establish meaningful careers, to turning around organizational cultures, her life’s work begins and ends with a “people first” approach.
